Built in 1737, the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli is the oldest theatre in Europe. It is managed by the Foundation of the same name, which takes care of its management and organizes in-house symphonic, opera and ballet seasons, as well as tending to the historical museum and documentation center of the theatre. Lately, alongside the artistic productions, the Fondazione has been working on several fronts, specifically on the development of the new MEMUS – Museo e Archivio Storico del Teatro di San Carlo (the Museum and historical Archive of the Teatro di San Carlo), to increase the activities of artists' workshops in the former Cirio factory in Vigliena and educational activities, in many cases with a strong social value.
The Compagnia di San Paolo has so far supported the opera and ballet seasons, directing its own contribution to the inaugural performances. Started in 2001, the supportive relationship with the Compagnia di San Paolo resulted in contributions totaling € 3,950,000
